Top Ten Photographers

Henri Cartier Bresson (August 1904 – August 2004)

was a French photographer  considered to be the father of modern photojournalism, an early adopter of 35mm format, and the master of candid photography. He helped develop the “street photography” style that has influenced generations of photographers that followed.

Ansel Easton Adams (February 20, 1902 – April 22, 1984)

was an American photographer and environmentalist, best known for his black-and-white photographs of the American West and primarily Yosemite National Park.

For his images, he developed the zone system, a way to determine the proper exposure of a photograph. The resulting clarity and depth were characteristic of his photographs. Although his large-format 8×10 film camera was difficult to use because of its size, weight, setup time, and film cost, its high resolution ensured sharpness in his images. His use of the unwieldy camera demonstrated his determination to achieve a vision of perfection.

He founded the Group f/64 along with fellow photographers Edward Weston and Imogen Cunningham, which in turn created the Museum of Modern Arts department of photography. Adams’ timeless and visually stunning photographs are reproduced on calendars, posters, and in books, making his photographs widely recognizable.

jose Maria Rodriguez Madoz (born 1958)

better known as Chema Madoz is a Spanish photographer, best known for his black and white surrealist photographs. Chema Madoz studied Art History at Universidad Complutense de Madrid between 1980 and 1983. It is here that he was first exposed to the study of photography and imaging.

In an interview published in 2001, Chema explains that he currently uses a Hasselblad camera to take his photos. The book, Chema Madoz: Objetos 1990–1999 was presumably shot entirely with this camera, rather than the 6×6 Mamiya he has used previously.

Olivo Barbieri

It’s often hard to convince people that Olivo Barbieri’s aerial photographs are real. They look uncannily like hyperdetailed models, absent the imperfections of reality. Streets are strangely clean, trees look plastic, and odd distortions of scale create the opposite effect of what we expect from aerial photography—a complete overview, like military surveillance. “I was a little bit tired of the idea of photography allowing you to see everything,” Barbieri says. “After 9/11 the world had become a little bit blurred because things that seemed impossible happened. My desire was to look at the city again.”

I love the effect of what tilt shift photography gives you and the work above is absolutely fantastic. There is also alot more examples of work like this which you can see below from various different photographers.

Edward Henry Weston

He began photographing at the age of sixteen after receiving a Bull’s Eye #2 camera from his father. Weston’s first photographs captured the parks of Chicago and his aunt’s farm. He is most famous for his series of photos on peppers which is probably the most replicated photos in the world which you can see below.
